Android 4.0 ICS on 11% of Devices, Gingerbread still on Top

Google has updated its Android Developer site with the data in percentages about the active devices running on Android operating system. The data shows that the Android 2.3 “;Gingerbread”; is still on the top with total of 63.6% Android devices running Gingerbread, followed by 17.3 % Android devices running 2.2 “;Froyo”;. The installed base percentage of Android 2.2 & 2.3 is slowly decreasing, dropping with 1-2 percentage points over the month, but even today low-end devices are being shipped and powered with Gingerbread.

One thing good about the data is that Android 4.0 ”;Ice Cream Sandwich”; is finally picking up some speed, as in last month, the active devices running with Android 4.0 were just 3.8% but now the percentage has pumped up to 10.9%. Though it is still a less percentage given the fact that ICS was released 8 months ago.

The gain in percentage of Android 4.0 ICS came as device manufacturers continued to roll out their ICS updates and flagship Android 4.0 devices worldwide namely HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III.

As Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) took this long time to make Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 available on one tenth of the Android devices in the market, things are not looking too promising for the newly arrived Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Google hopes to improve roll out time with the release of Platform Development Kit (PDK) for Android device partners, but only Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, and Motorola Xoom will be getting the updates of Jelly Bean 4.1 whereas other manufacturers including Acer, Asus and HTC will have to wait for their Android 4.1 update plans.

The data was based on the number of Android devices that have accessed Google Play to update or download the apps within a 14-day period from 19th June to 2nd July. This data was to be provided to developers so that they can decide how to prioritize the development of their applications’ features for the devices currently in the hands of users.

Following is the data being collected by Google Play in 14 days to give the Percentage distribution of Android versions running on Android devices:
