Best 10 Greatest Time Travel Movies Ever

time travel movies

Given the fact that ‘;time travel’; is fascinating for children and adults alike, Hollywood has produced dozens of flicks centered round time travel throughout history. From aliens and cowboys to robots and dwarves, here is our run down of the top 10 time-travel movies of all time.

10. The Butterfly Effect (2004)

To start of our list we have this head-spin teen flick starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart. The protagonist, ‘;Evan‘;, finds that he has a special power to delve back into the past by re-reading his diary.

Throughout the film he attempts to use this skill to change bad things that happened, but each time he only serves to make things worse.

And in the end…;well, you’ll just have to watch it and find out!

9. The Time Traveler’;s Wife (2009)

Okay, so the movie isn’;t anywhere near as good as the book, but it’s still well worth watching! Starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, the film follows the life of a man with a time travelling gene, and his consequently complicated relationship with his wife.

There is a huge paradoxical question about what sequence of events comes first: he finds her as a child, she finds him as an adult. My advice is…;don’t think about it too hard!

;

8. Flight of the Navigator (1986)

A true 80’s classic, this film follows a twelve year old boy who is abducted by an alien ship and delivered eight years into the future.

He develops an unlikely friendship with his abductor, and takes a risk to journey back into the past where he belongs.

;

7. Back to the Future

We couldn’;t choose which Back to the Future film is the best, so this vote represents all three of them. Whether ‘;Marty‘; and ‘;Doc‘; are trying to blend in, in the 50s, donning their cowboy hats and spurs or gallivanting around in a future world, their adventures are nothing short of epic.

And, of course, hover boards are the best imagined future invention of movie history.

;

6. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures (1989)

Ah, if only we could all have solved our problems with school assignments and homework in this way. Starring a crazily young Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, the film follows the boy’s escapades as they travel back in time to collect historical figures such as Aristotle and Genghis Khan to help them pass a school assignment.

Apparently, the future of rock and roll relies on them staying together!

;

5. Groundhog Day (1993)

Ever get that pesky feeling of deja vu? Well, this 90’s adventure starring Bill Murray and Andy MacDowell takes that idea to the extreme. ‘;Phil‘; is a disheartened weather man who wakes to find that he is doomed to live Groundhog Day over and over again. But can he use time management techniques to change his future?

And, more importantly, what the heck is a ground hog?

;

4. Terminator 2 –; The Judgement Day (1991)

Arnold Swarzeneger…; what a legend! Nobody else could play an assassin cyborg from the future quite as well. You guys have all seen this one, right??

;

3. Donnie Darko (2001)

The ultimate hipster film, Donnie Darko defies most people’s understanding…;they simply know that they liked it! Do you have to be a physics and time travel expert to fully appreciate what’s going on?

Possibly…;crazy old lady, metal rabbit, chest slug- it does all get a wee bit confusing.

;

2. Twelve Monkeys (1995)

Really, there are two movies here, as many of the ideas for the explosive plot of Twelve Monkeys, starring Bruce Willis, were taken from French science fiction film La Jett, made in 1962.

The best things about Twelve Monkeys are the twists and turns in the plot, and explorations of what it might mean to be insane as well as a scarily believable vision of the future.

;

1.Time Bandits (1981)

What do you mean, this shouldn’;t be top of the list?? Dwarves, rainbows, treasure and time-travel- what more could you want from a movie?
