The Definition of Coffered Ceiling Design

A coffer refers to the appearance of a sunken panel in a ceiling. Usually, in a modern day house a coffered ceiling treatment is applied to give the visual appearance of coffering. Often these types of coffers are produced of faux beams or even plaster. A coffered ceiling is a ceiling that consists of recessed panels, usually trimmed with ornamental motifs. They were utilized in Greek and Roman architecture as each a decorative element as a means of lightening the load of a heavy marble or stone ceiling, as noticed in the Roman Pantheon and the Athenian Propylaia.
